Ground Control

Under the gravel that covers the surface of the LOFAR LBA field, there is a sheet of weed suppressant. This prevents wind-blown seed from taking root in the hard soil below. The gravel itself is only about 5cm thick, and is quite sparse, making the maintenance and control of the field easier. In this photograph a partially deployed roll of textile can be seen. The gravel has started to be scattered over it.
